Putting the “Community” Back in College: How Community Colleges Use Social Media to Build Relationships & Drive Engagement
In an effort to better understand and evaluate current social media usage at community colleges, I conducted a national survey of 574 community colleges in fall 2013. The purpose of this study was to explore how community colleges use social media to communicate and build relationships with students and the campus community. The survey sought information about current usage, initial implementation, policies and guidelines, and best practices for institutional social media use.
The resulting study identifies patterns and commonalities, offers insight into why colleges are using social media, provides a list of recommendations, and predicts what the future holds for social media in higher education.
